I can not turn off my comp

I tried on General Help forum but unsuccessfully – maybe this one will be more lucky.

AutoFsck ruined my Karmic. I can not shutdown my comp. It hangs (freezes) with messages:
*lots of numbers generated by fsck, then: *not automatically fixing this....
    *Shutting down ALSA...
*Asking all remaining processes to terminate...
    *Deconfiguring network interfaces...
    *Deactivating swap...
    then a blinking cursor → [ - ] forever..............!!!!!

I'm positive its AutoFsck related because it started the day when the only change I did was installing AutoFsck.
I think, it triggered fsck to check sda3, which is partition on my failing first drive (16 bad sectors) and it keeps doing this, even after I did manual fsck on all partitions, removed AutoFsck, changed the frequency of the checks in fstab, and commented out sda3 entry in fstab.
[Lots of numbers & *not automatically fixing this....] comes up also at booting but then it boots up properly.

I did a lots of goggling and forums reading last few days but nothing worked for me except “alt + REISUO”, which is not really a fix and doesn't work every time (why?).
BTW, "sudo shutdown -h -P now" doesn't work either and most of the time I have to hold “off” button.

I'm in dire straits, so please help - anybody!

I'm not sure why you would use -h and -P.

Have you tried 'sudo shutdown -P now' ??

Sorry for my bad English if it was! Its not funny in my mother language, Polish. Anyway, its bloody tragic, not funny and I'm crying for help here. PLSE!
And yes I tried 'sudo shutdown -P now', unsuccessfully.

One question: are you using a wubi install? If so, then this is a known bug.

    -Yos

The bug was reported here and the fix for it is in post number 19.

    Hi zedi.

You are right, it is not funny.

    YosefKaro,
No I'm not using a wubi install – its a normal installation.

    And
    hansdown,
REISUB is for rebooting and is working. I need shutdown – REISUO, and is working only sometimes. Most of the time I have to hold 'off' button.

Well, I think you have just learned an important lesson:
switch off the automatic file system checks and don't install autofsck.

It does more harm than good.
I suggest you try apt-get install --reinstall sysv-utils
In a world without walls and fences, who needs Windows and Gates?
Linux is like a wigwam.... no Gates, no Windows but Apache inside!

Re: I can not turn off my comp

    WitchCraft,

Here are results of command you suggested:

    sudo apt-get install --reinstall sysv-utils
    [sudo] password for zedi:
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    E: Couldn't find package sysv-utils

    What source I'm missing?
