Hi Leppie, I had initially looked at this but it is'nt showing any packages as being broken. nothing in the list.

unfortunately the last command:

dpkg --configure -a

did'nt appear to remedy my problem as it is still telling me there is a broken package.

thanks leoquant, should this command return a result? could you give me an idea of it's purpose. thanks for bearing with a newbie.

OK. I have got it working. it's nice too :)

So I followed your instructions then decided to try removing rEFIt from my Mac partition. Now when I boot up with ALT to define startup it...

6) Reinstall grub (this shouldn't overwrite rEFIt, but you can keep a copy of rEFIt on CD if you're concerned)
