    unfortunately the last command:

    dpkg --configure -a

    did'nt appear to remedy my problem as it is still telling me there is a broken package.

    So I followed your instructions then decided to try removing rEFIt from my Mac partition. Now when I boot up with ALT to define startup it...

    6) Reinstall grub (this shouldn't overwrite rEFIt, but you can keep a copy of rEFIt on CD if you're concerned)
    $ grub-install /dev/sda
