I finally switched my router from WPA2 TKIP/AES combo to AES only, and my wireless in Ubuntu 10.04 has been stable since. But there is obviously something bad about 10.04 given that this worked fine...
Personally I'd sooner downgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 than going Vista, but that's me. ;) Hopefully we'll have a solution to this sooner than later, since this problem clearly lies with the 10.04 version....
